Mario2.Caterer.WMATA.WDC.3jul06
catering business
When I boarded the subway at Waterfront Station, in SW, I'd take at seat and began to prepare my camera equipment a man, sitting next to me, would look at me and say 'Hey, how are ya?". It was Chef Mario Bush, who I met many years ago when I worked with Susan Gage Caterers . www.SusanGage.com . Actor and Drama professor Ken Bush and I were amongst the very first to work with Susan Gage in March 1987 when she launched her catering business which is now ranked amongst the top 5 caterers in the WDC area.

While I do not now remember exactly when Mario would join Susan Gage, I believe it was sometimes in the late 90's or early new millennium what I do remember is the Mario was an experienced chef and qucikly would move up in the ranks. Which, in the WDC caterering idustry is no small feat. Another aspect of Mario that I respected was the fact that he was not like some of the other chefs where he would only perform as a chef. Perhaps, more indicative of caterers of color, you';ll find that Mario is just as adepth as a chef as he is in all aspects of the catering and event coordinating industry.

So, early on, though we was a trained chef, he would also accept assignments as a waiter, bartender or pantry support.

As time passed I would see Mario at other caterers, including Occasions Caterers . www.OccasionsCaterers.com with whom I had a long standing association with.

In fact, in years past, Independence Day Weekend had been a holiday that I would work from dawn to dusk and perhaps later on the National Mall with Occasions. 4 july is often the last weekend that work is available for caterers in the WDC area until after Labor Day Weekend.

Though, a few of use would have work throughout the summer, it was between 4 july and Labor day that caterering staff would take some time off and caterers would make changes, internally, for the fall.

When I happened upon Mario Bush on the subway on 3 July he was in the midst of writing up a menu proposal. Perhaps several. When I inquired he said that while he still associates with several catererers, including Dish Caterers . www.DishCaterers.com he now has many of his own clients and operates a full service catering and event planning business.

Catering can be a very profitable business in WDC but in order to be successful one has to be able to deliver beyond and above. These are qualities that I would first observe of Mario Bush, many years ago, when I first observed him at Susan Gage Caterers . www.SusanGage.com .

To reach Mario Bush at Catering By Mario, a full service catering & event planning networking business, call 301-209-0596. If he, himnself, is not available, he can network to find someone who is.

Tallaght - South City Business Park (MAK Fastener Specialists)
doing business as
Today I paid a visit to Tallaght but as the rain became very heavy I had to give up taking photographs however I do plan to visit again in the very near future. Because of the rain I decided to have lunch at captain America's … the staff had the following legend on their t-shirts "Born To Serve", I really do hope that it was the Captain rather than the staff who was born to serve.

Sometime before his death in 792AD, St Mael Ruain founded a monastery that was to become famous for a number of reasons. The Stowe Missal was written in this monastery about 800AD and numerous religious scholars travelled great distances to the area to study. In fact, both Tallaght and Finglas were revered as centres of learning at the time and were referred to as the 'Eyes of Ireland'.

Unfortunately the monastery was destroyed by the Vikings in 811AD. The Church of Ireland parish of St Mael Ruain is built on the site of Mael Ruain's monastery. Commenced in 1829, it was designed by the City Architect, John Semple (1829-42) and the old church still remains with its high rectangular tower.

Today, Tallaght is the capital of the new administrative county of South Dublin. The River Poddle meanders through Tymon Park, which, with some fine water features provides cosy residence for large colonies of wildfowl. Extensive new woodland planting has enhanced a lot of fine walks in the park too. The Sean Walsh Memorial Park is another fine landscaped area.

A multi-level shopping complex - The Square in Tallaght was a welcome addition to the local community. Located about forty-five minutes southwest of Dublin city center, it is linked to Dublin by several high frequency bus routes and the excellent Luas tram service.

While no plan was formally adopted, Tallaght was laid out as a new town, as set out in the 1967 Myles Wright masterplan for Greater Dublin (this proposed four self-contained "new towns" - at Tallaght, Clondalkin, Lucan and Blanchardstown - all of which were at that time villages surrounded by extensive open lands, with some small settlements). Many of the social and cultural proposals in this plan were ignored by the Dublin local authorities, and contrary to planners' suggestions, Tallaght and the other "new towns" were not provided with adequate facilities. Characterised by the same problems associated with poorly planned fringe areas of many European cities, during the 1970s and 1980s Tallaght became synonymous with suburban mismanagement.

While it was absorbed into the larger suburban area of Dublin (including becoming the postal district Dublin 24 in the late 1980s), Tallaght has developed a distinctive identity, arising largely from its rapid growth during recent decades, and now has a thriving local arts, cultural, sports, and economic outlook.

Tallaght's Civic Square contains the seat of the local authority, County Hall, a newly renovated and well-equipped library facility, a theatre building and a "cutting edge" 4-storey arts centre named RUA RED (which opened on 5 February 2009). Along with other local libraries and arts groups, it also has another theatre building, and a homegrown youth theatre company. It is also the home to the Tallaght Swim Team, Tallaght Rugby Club , the National Basketball Arena, Shamrock Rovers F.C., and several notable martial arts schools and

Leaving Toronto
on line business
I am on a business trip to St. Vincent. To get their I flied from Ottawa to Toronto to Barbados and then my last hop was supposed to be right to St. Vincent.

After landing late in Toronto because we had to circle quite a bit our plane was late boarding and then we sat on the tarmack for about an hour before going to line up for de-icing.

When we got to Barbados we were supposed to have 3 hours to grab our bags, check in to our next flight and then wait. We ended up having 40 minutes and missed our next flight. They put us on the next flight to St. Vincent which also stopped in Granada (which is out of the way). So we ended up getting in 3 hours late.

I have a few other shots from the Toronto Airport that I might share later.

:

consider the issues below:

:

global poverty.

rapid depletion of finite resources.

peak oil.

child slavery.

sweatshops.

pollution.

corporate influence of government policy.

unchecked consumption.

untrammelled greed.

personal debt crisis.

record foreclosures.

ponzi schemes.

unregulated financial institutions.

criminal behaviour of corporations.

industrial disasters.

child labour.

:

now ask yourself the question again.

:

does it sound in any way sensible?

does it sound in any way ethical?

does it sound in any way achievable?

:

given the current [insane] climate of unparalleled greed, ludicrous high risk business models, entirely unregulated financial markets, lunatic avarice and egregiously destructive consumption, i would suggest that many people would look at this question and quite simply fail to understand it.

i would suggest that many people would think this question to be one that verges on insanity.

consume less!!

less!!

how on earth is that possible?

how on earth is that workable?

i want more and more and more and more and more.

i do as i am told.

:

given time, this question may well answer itself.

given time, we may well have no other choice.

The Rio de Janeiro Metro (Metrô Rio) is a mass-transit underground railway network that serves the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Founded in 1979 with five stations operating on one line, it now includes 32 stations and two separate lines and serves on average nearly half a million passengers per day.

The system currently consists of two lines:

Line 1 (orange line), which serves the city's downtown business center, tourist areas in the city's South Zone, and several neighborhoods in the North Zone. It is a semi-circular line, and is fully underground. It runs from Saens Peña to Cantagalo.
Line 1 A (orange line), is the expansion between stations São Cristóvão and Central, leading to an line to Botafogo. In its traject, the Cidade Nova estation is placed in front of the City Hall.
Line 2 (green line), which serves working-class residential neighborhoods extending toward the north. It is a diagonal line, and almost completely over ground (mostly at graded and partly elevated). This line started as a light rail, but for increasing commuters, it gradually changed to metro. For its origin as light rail, it is fully over ground except Estácio station, although Cidade Nova station will be lifted.

About James Schouw

Award winning Yaletown developer James Schouw is a designer, green-minded builder, philanthropist, and community visionary. A building by James Schouw looks unlike any other, anywhere else in the world. James is influenced by early Vancouver architecture with neo-classical elements but his designs are truly original and eclectic.

James oversees all aspects of his developments, from conception, to design, to construction. His timeless design with attention to detail and cutting edge construction, has created a devoted following. His buildings are on the ‘must-see’ list of Vancouver architecture and it’s a common site to see people taking pictures of his buildings. The beauty of his buildings have turned them into Habitable Art, art that people live in.

Best known for the dramatic style of his buildings, James is changing the way buildings are built and raising the bar for environmental sensitivity with his innovative designs. His landmark Grace building, at 1280 Richards, is the first high rise in the city to have been conceived with energy efficient geothermal heating, a technology that saves on heating costs, produces minimal greenhouse gases and has set the standard for other high end projects. The carbon emission reduction for Grace is the equivalent of taking 100 cars off the road annually. In addition to the Geothermal heating system, his projects incorporate a rainwater recovery system. He has also installed a fingerprint recognition security system that ensures only inhabitants gain entrance.

Creating buildings with a reduced environmental footprint is a reflection of James’ overall development philosophy. He has sense of responsibility to enhance the community and give back to society. A minimum of 50% of each year’s net corporate and personal income will be donated to humanitarian efforts over a ten-year period. Charity work is ingrained into his company’s values and culture.

Born in Winnipeg and raised in Vancouver, James studied physics at university but became fascinated with construction after spending time helping his architect father at a construction site. A natural entrepreneur he left school to start a successful ice cream distribution business and to pursue his interest in design and construction. His own dissatisfaction with what he saw on the market prompted him to build his first multifamily development, Iliad. James is a long time resident of Yaletown and always resides in the projects he creates so that they have the liveability that he would expect in a home.

James’ Grace building was awarded the 2008 Georgie Award for High Rise of the Year, was a nominee for best multi-family housing for the national SAM awards, and was a finalist for the international SPARK design awards. James is a past winner of Business in Vancouver’s 40 under 40 Award and he has been featured on CBC Television’s “Living Vancouver”, HGTV’s Lofty Ideas, and CKNW’s “Adler Online”. He is an occasional contributor to Business in Vancouver Magazine, writing articles giving his thoughtful perspective on Vancouver’s housing industry.

Los Angeles District Business Open House

Open house for business opportunities
By Dave Palmer

LOS ANGELES -- During an open house July 25, more than 200 business owners met division chiefs and project managers from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District to learn about contract opportunities and, in some cases, simply to learn, how to get started in doing business with the Corps.

Based on the sheer size of the District’s area of responsibility, 226,000 square miles across Southern California, southern Nevada, a slice of Utah and all of Arizona, leadership feels it would be cost prohibitive to get everyone involved in the project process out to job sites to meet the contract partners.

“You really have to develop those relationships with the companies that do the work for us,” said Col. Mark Toy, District commander. “It’s (open house) a very efficient way for our contractors to meet everybody.”

Major District projects are diverse; as construction of the border fence for Department of Homeland Security, rehabilitation of Veterans Affairs facilities, the California High-Speed Rail and the world’s largest groundwater recharge system in Orange County, Calif.

“Hopefully we’re seeing a lot of partnering and mentoring going on between larger and smaller companies,” added Toy. “Not only are we increasing the opportunities, for these companies to work with the Corps, we’re also creating a platform for them to do this partnering amongst themselves. And that’s a good thing, too.”

The open house was held in two sessions, morning and afternoon, in the District's Emergency Operations Center and adjoining conference room with project and program displays and brochures listing various interdisciplinary branches of the Corps.
