Agile Information Management
Agile development models include just in time information gathering processes. Agile information gathering processes include rapid collection of content and the clear appearance of the resulting documents. Collecting technical business requirements and immediately folding them into the client template is an agile information management method.

Business Analyst Teams need to capture requirements as they are clarified. This is especially important when:
1. The deliverable is the requirement document first and foremost
2. The outline for documenting incoming requirements already exists
3. Tight deadlines exists and there is any risk of delays in documentation, or in overlapping out-of-date information being presented to the client–
4. Or if the document control tool, which is commonly used for working together interactively, is flakey and as a result document versions may become dated

It is not an agile process to wait to add known requirements. For example having project management, or development directing a business analyst to wait until later to add or modify incoming requirements prior to a document presentation. It makes sense to put the correct and current requirements into the current document. It is more logical to keep found things found by categorizing them immediately.
1. It is a waste of time and money, searching when editing the same document repeatedly, or by different individuals, when the requirement should be added on the fly
2. It is frustrating for the BA, it is frustrating for the client when they read out of date requirements
3. It creates unnecessary control issues
4. It runs counter to the clients’ actual needs and requests
5. It isn’t agile any more, it is an outdated technique

Presentation of business requirements is 50% of the job of development consulting, that is, what a document actually looks like really matters to governance and business people
1. Because they spend all their time in documents, generally they want them to look familiar and be formatted correctly, so it makes sense to use their templates
2. They care about documentation, and that is your value to them
3. Your clients will never have your depth of knowledge regarding technology, which means you will have to explain your processes and reasons if you do it any other way (slowing the process down) besides using their processes and procedures
4. The business and governance or project management office people will participate in decision making about actually building the project, or not, and you want them to want to work with you, by showing that you will work with them!

Yes, they blow. You know that your business is in trouble when you make it as hard as possible for your customers to leave. I realized that saucesf.com, the domain for our restaurant is still on register.com (one of our last). In attempting to move it off to my registrar of choice, I find that you have to CALL to get the auth code. Now, everything else can be done via e-mail or web interface. But leave? Hell no, you have to call and speak with someone. Guess who's business is in trouble? Thank God for competition....

A Nobel Peace Prize winner and ‘world’s banker to the poor’ will urge young people to use business for social and community benefit at a unique summit at the University of Salford later this month.

Bangladeshi economist Muhammad Yunus has helped millions across the world lift themselves out of poverty by making small, unsecured loans available through his community-based Grameen Bank to people who would otherwise be unable to access credit or other financial services.

And now he is hoping to inspire a new generation to set up businesses with a social conscience at the Muhammad Yunus: Building Social Business event to be held at the University on Saturday 18 May.

The Blue Bottle Coffee Mint Plaza Café, at 66 Mint Street, opened in January 2008 in the rear of the 1912 Provident Loan Building.

The café, Blue Bottle's first, features a first of its kind in the United States five-light siphon bar featuring a weekly changing menu of three single origin coffees, a Kyoto-style iced coffee apparatus, a one-group San Marco lever machine, and a three-group La Marzocco Linea used for the 17 ft. Ceiling espresso blend. The café features breakfast, brunch and lunch menus as well as desserts made at the Blue Bottle Kitchen in Oakland.

Named after The Blue Bottle, Central Europe's first coffee house opened in 1683 in Vienna by Franz George Kolshitsky, Blue Bottle Coffee was started by James Freeman in 2001. He would roast his own coffee beans in a 186-square-foot shed adjacent to his Oakland apartment and brew fresh coffee at farmers' markets around the Bay Area. As his business grew, he expanded his roastery and built a commercial baking kitchen that is run by his wife, Caitlin Williams Freeman. In 2005, he opened a permanent kiosk in Hayes Valley and in 2009 expanded with a full fledged café in the Ferry Building and a smaller café in the San Franciscco Museum of Modern Art. In 2010, Blue Bottle expanded to New York with a café in Williamsburg.

This Pogo's been a workhorse in my home office. Purchased in 2000, it's run everything from Windows 2000 betas to Windows Small Business Server 2003.

Its performance became intermittent more than six months ago. The power supply (already replaced once after filling my server closet with acrid white aluminum smoke) tested OK, but the system's failing. With 512MB RAM, two IDE HDs and a sweet (for its time) ATI All In Wonder Radeon, I wrote two technology books (one a tech bestseller) with the help of this system.

After finally giving up the ghost this past week (I could no longer create users in SBS2003, the Exchange store kept going bad, etc.), it has been decommissioned.

RIP, my Pogo Athlon 1GHz companion; you served me well.

WASHINGTON STATE FIREFIGHTER “FIREMAN JOHNNY” HAS HIS ACCOUNT DELETED BY FLICKR

I was disappointed this weekend to learn that a friend of mine and fellow DMU member “Fireman Johnny” had his long-standing Flickr account of 5 years deleted without warning by Flickr Friday night.

Johnny is a Washington State firefighter who was very active in our DMU group where he could always be counted on to tell us great stories about what real life as a firefighter was like. In addition to being active in our DMU group, Johnny also administered two other groups on Flickr. One that warned about the dangers of drinking and driving and another “The Brave Soldiers and the families who support them” which was a central place for military families to come talk about issues. Now that Johnny’s been deleted, he can no longer administer this group which was very important to him and a number of families of American soldiers who went there for support.

Johnny’s as genuine a guy as they come.

So why did Flickr nuke Johnny’s account?

This is Flickr’s official answer back to him:

The thread referenced by Flickr has also been deleted from Flickr now as well.

And what was the thread about?

Johnny was upset that a level 3 sex offender (the worst 3% of all offenders) with previous convictions for child molestation had moved into his neighborhood next to a school. Johnny was upset by this and so he posted a thread about this in DMU on Flickr along with the molester’s *publicly available information* from a state run sex offender registry. The registry is public information and anyone can access it here.

The registry has no stipulation against sharing or republishing the information and in fact even has a “tell a friend” button right on the form where you can put in a friend’s email address and have the entry sent to them automatically.

In the thread Johnny never threatened anyone. He simply posted the public info sheet on this sex offender (freely available to anyone on the internet) and then talked about his frustration with the situation in his neighborhood. But apparently he violated Flickr’s policy against “venting ones frustrations online.”

Because Flickr has no undo account deletion, Johnnys 5-year account is now permanently erased.

Fireman Johnny has started a new Flickr account as Firefighter Johnny, but unfortunately his previous five years, including all his photos and entire digital existence on Flickr have been wiped completely off of planet Flickr.

I quite honestly don’t know what to do about these reckless and random account deletions that seem to be happening more and more frequently on Flickr. If Fireman Johnny can be deleted, any of us can be deleted. Being upset about a level 3 sex offender and posting about it on Flickr absolutely should not get your account deleted. Johnny was upset that this guy moved into his neighborhood right by an elementary school. That’s a natural reaction. He shared his upsetting news in a thread on Flickr and whamo, the Flickr police nuked his account right out from underneath him.

Another DMU brother hits the dust, and a good one at that.

That sucks.

Blake Irving, if you really care about Flickr like you claimed Friday in your tweet, you’ll fix this mess.

Account deletions should not be immediate, permanent and irrevocable. If we invest thousands of hours of our online lives into Flickr we *deserve* an appeal process. We *deserve* due process before our digital lives are deleted. We *deserve* an opportunity to take self-corrective action before you nuke us out of existence.

We entrust you with our digital lives. Have some respect for the content we bring to Flickr. Have some basic human decency. Because without our content your Flickr is nothing. Flickr only works because of our generosity in sharing our content. Acknowledge that and show us some respect.

Why couldn’t you have just told Johnny that you had a problem with his thread and that if he didn’t delete it you’d nuke him? Why couldn’t you have just nuked the thread and left his account alive? Why destroy a 5-year account, his administration of other important groups and his whole digital life on Flickr?

Johnny didn’t deserve this. Thanks for making Flickr a little bit safer for child molesters and a little bit more hostile and fearful for the rest of us Yahoo.

The Humanist Institute for Development Cooperation (Hivos), a leading Dutch organisation with a worldwide presence, and its partner organization Venture Capital for Africa (VC4Africa.biz), the leading Africa focused business community for entrepreneurs and investors, are pleased to announce CESACOPA the winner of 2012 Incubator Award.

CESACOPA is a coffee cooperative located in Amboim province, Angola. The main objective of the CESACOPA project is to increase coffee quality standards for export while at the same time making a clear contribution to the community e.g., employment generation and pollution abatement. The coffee is produced without use of chemicals or pesticides and the fertilizer used is organic. It is also noted that the project impacts some 6000 families as direct beneficiaries. Leo Soldaat, the Senior Advisor of Financial Services at Hivos, explained, ‘At Hivos, we stand for supporting entrepreneurial activities with important impact in the areas of poverty, climate change and food security. Our focus is on people living in rural areas and CESACOPA is an example of a promising initiative taking these challenges head on.’

This year’s African Finance and Investment Forum, held on the 18th of June at the Rabobank Headquarters in the Netherlands, gathered leading global representatives from a variety of sectors to highlight the financial tools, solutions and growing policy trends needed to ensure economic growth for Africa’s SMEs. The discussions and proposals highlighted at the forum are essential for a cross section of African sectors and look at concrete strategies needed to establish their full economic potential. The Rabobank Foundation, Centenary Bank, Global Development Cooperative, the World Bank, GIZ (German International Cooperation Organisation), FARA and the Shell Foundation are just a few of the organisations that attended the AFIF this year.

The Humanist Institute for Development Cooperation (Hivos), a leading Dutch organisation with a worldwide presence, and its partner organization Venture Capital for Africa (VC4Africa.biz), the leading Africa focused business community for entrepreneurs and investors, are pleased to announce CESACOPA the winner of 2012 Incubator Award.

CESACOPA is a coffee cooperative located in Amboim province, Angola. The main objective of the CESACOPA project is to increase coffee quality standards for export while at the same time making a clear contribution to the community e.g., employment generation and pollution abatement. The coffee is produced without use of chemicals or pesticides and the fertilizer used is organic. It is also noted that the project impacts some 6000 families as direct beneficiaries. Leo Soldaat, the Senior Advisor of Financial Services at Hivos, explained, ‘At Hivos, we stand for supporting entrepreneurial activities with important impact in the areas of poverty, climate change and food security. Our focus is on people living in rural areas and CESACOPA is an example of a promising initiative taking these challenges head on.’

This year’s African Finance and Investment Forum, held on the 18th of June at the Rabobank Headquarters in the Netherlands, gathered leading global representatives from a variety of sectors to highlight the financial tools, solutions and growing policy trends needed to ensure economic growth for Africa’s SMEs. The discussions and proposals highlighted at the forum are essential for a cross section of African sectors and look at concrete strategies needed to establish their full economic potential. The Rabobank Foundation, Centenary Bank, Global Development Cooperative, the World Bank, GIZ (German International Cooperation Organisation), FARA and the Shell Foundation are just a few of the organisations that attended the AFIF this year.
