Business Secretary Vince Cable is set to get advice from two successful entrepreneurs appointed to help the government address the needs of small and medium sized businesses.

Business owners Lawrence Tomlinson and Rekha Mehr are to become the entrepreneurs in residence at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) after fighting off competition from over 200 other applicants.

Experienced Leeds-based entrepreneur Lawrence Tomlinson has run businesses in a number sectors including construction, software, chemicals, cars, and care homes.

Rekha Mehr is the founder and owner of Pistachio Rose, a London-based business creating high-end Anglo-Indian cakes and sweets. She has been hired specifically to be a voice for start ups and small firms.

Business Secretary Vince Cable said:

These appointments are about better involving businesses in government’s decision making process, so that we can support their growth in a more intelligent way.

I’ve already visited Lawrence’s company headquarters near Leeds and had exposure to his trenchant view on banks and of the high-performance cars that he manufactures. I will be visiting Rekha’s main retail outlet at Fortnum and Masons today.

Rekha and Lawrence will be important voices for businesses in my department. Having them on hand to offer feedback and advice will be a significant asset and help keep our focus firmly on the needs of entrepreneurs.

Huge Shift: The Future of News...

Investigative News, Democracy and the Economy...The New News System...Today's headlines dominate: Fox Nation debuts. But this isn't what should be the biggest media news. Buried on Huffington Post's Media page is the announcement by Arianna Huffington of her idea for the future of the news, is for privately funded non-profit investigative journalism that will keep democracy alive as the future of the news media, as we have known it, is in steep decline, especially in this economy. Her first focus for this project: The Economy.

Clay Shirkey this month kicked off his idea of the News Problem Newspapers and Thinking the Unthinkable which led to NYU Journalism Professor Jay Rosen to put out a big follow-up think piece on the future of news with links (see my post here for links and stats on the decline of advertising for the news business). Jay Rosen announces today that he will have a major role in this new effort announced by HuffPo.

Also today the Washington Post announces major changes to the business news coverage. At washingtonpost.com/business, The Post is launching a new Economy & Business section, featuring breaking news and enterprise on the economic crisis, columnists, blogs, and expanded market data. And... All of our economic and business coverage will now appear in the A-section. We are introducing a daily Washington Business page (today, A12), which replaces the weekly section. Washington Business will be part of our Economy & Business coverage in the A-section Tuesday through Saturday, which includes a new stock-data page to replace our daily stock-price listings. Readers wanting up-to-the-minute quotes on stock prices and other investing tools can find that information at washingtonpost.com/markets.

Since September I've been studying the media and the economy as it unfolds in The Great Financial Crisis, starting on Flickr and in a blog post: Part I: Sept. U.S. Economic Crisis Media Study and the blog post Bigge$ st Cri$ i$ and Media

Government has announced an extra £1 billion for businesses seeking support at the National Manufacturing Summit.

The funding is part of the Regional Growth Fund and takes the total to £2.4 billion.

It will be available to businesses and public / private partnerships with ambitions to create new jobs and make a significant impact on their local economy.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg made the announcement at the Government’s National Manufacturing Summit at the Bristol & Bath Science Park.

He also confirmed that 48 of the successful firms from the first two rounds of the fund have completed their legal checks and have access to the Government fund. Speaking ahead of the summit, he said;

“The Fund is already having a huge impact across the UK. So far there have been over 170 successful bids to the fund, leveraging around £7.5 billion of private sector investment and set to create and protect 330,000 jobs. I want to see more businesses that are confident they can create jobs and get Britain building and making things again, coming forward – making sure their hats are in the ring.

“Funding from rounds one and two has gone to some extraordinarily promising manufacturing projects. From Pirelli Tyres in Carlisle who’ll use the money to develop a new range of carbon-cutting tyres; to a Portsmouth based company which hopes to use theirs to create a cutting edge boat building college.

“These are the kinds of projects that will lead their communities into brighter times, helping put industry at the heart of the UK’s economy. Businesses have until June to apply for a share of this extra £1 billion.”

On the National Register of Historic Places and once the Miners' Supply store that also carried groceries, the structure is along OH93 in Coalton, Ohio.
The now-vcacant structure is historic because it was the first business to use a cash register.

"The National Cash Register Company was founded by John H. Patterson in Dayton, Ohio. Patterson (1844-1922), hoping the machines could save him money by reducing accounting errors in his supply business, purchased the patent rights to the cash register from James Ritty in 1884. Within six months, he reduced his debt and showed a profit. Patterson built the first National Cash Register factory on his family's farm in Dayton in 1888. By the turn of the century, the company had become one of the largest employers in Dayton. Known for his strict training program for salespeople and health and education programs for employees, Patterson was closely involved in the daily lives of many of his workers."

This Old House names North Charleston’s Park Circle a Best Old-House Neighborhood

A few nice business name search images I found:

This Old House names North Charleston’s Park Circle a Best Old-House Neighborhood
business name search
Photo of the front page of the Post and Courier: www.postandcourier.com/

Park Circle in North Charleston, SC has been named amongst the 2012 Best Old-House Neighborhoods. The editors of This Old House have tracked down neighborhoods that have promising futures, strong communities, and homes that truly deserve a long-term commitment.

This Old House notes Park Circle to be a location of “hundreds of lovingly crafted—albeit more modest and affordable—old houses surrounding a 30-plus-acre park filled with baseball fields, playgrounds, and a weekly farmer's market.”

Reasons to buy in Park Circle, according to This Old House, are many, “with its affordable houses and plenty of restaurants and shops on Montague Avenue, its main commercial thoroughfare, Park Circle is popular among first-time homebuyers. A new elementary school and a performing arts school draw families with children. Since more of the former naval base's buildings are being converted to office space, this is a great place for anyone with a good business plan, too.”

North Charleston Mayor R. Keith Summey stated, “After the closure of the Navy Base, a sustainable, community-driven vision was set forth for Park Circle and its surrounding communities. We hoped for a renaissance, and we got just that. Today, Park Circle is a diverse, progressive, vibrant neighborhood full of young families and professionals that are active in the community, take pride in their homes, and patronize our local, small businesses.” Mayor Summey continued, “We are honored to receive this recognition from This Old House, and consider it validation that Park Circle and the City of North Charleston are truly a great place to live, work, and play.”

This Old House scoured the United States and Canada to find unique, tight-knit neighborhoods for their fifth annual search for the Best Old-House Neighborhoods. These places might not be on your radar, but deserve to be, according to the magazine’s editors.

ThisOldHouse.com features 61 great spots, 51 in the United States and 10 in Canada, that fit the criteria of old-house neighborhoods – architectural diversity, craftsmanship of the homes, and the preservation momentum in the area as well as neighborhood amenities including walkability, safety and community. With the help of PreservationDirectory.com, neighborhood groups, real estate agents, and preservation societies, This Old House compiled their list of the best places to fall in love with one-of-a-kind period houses and bargains in need of a DIY remodel. The winning neighborhoods are also divided into categories such as Best Bargains, Best for Retirees, Best College Towns, and more.

The City of Danville is the seat of Vermilion County, and is located in East Central Illinois near the Indiana border. The population of Danville was 33,027 as of the 2010 census.

You are invited to stay and browse through my stream. Here's a quick index to my little corner of Flickr:

Automobile Photographs: This is a very large collection of images whose primary, but not exclusive, focus is on American automotive classics. Images are organized by decade, by manufacturer, and by topics (such as convertibles, station wagons, muscle cars, etc.)

Central Illinois (except Springfield): Central Illinois (except Springfield): Photos relating to the middle section of the "Land of Lincoln" (except for the Capital City of Springfield) may be found in this collection. Every city and town I've photographed is contained within its own set, and rural (as in "countryside") photographs are grouped by county.

Springfield, Illinois: All of my photographs of Springfield and the Abraham Lincoln Sites are in this collection. For the City of Springfield, there are separate sets for the Capitol Complex, Downtown (including the Old State Capitol), Neighborhoods, Parks, Illinois State Fairgrounds (and past State Fairs), and more. Photographs of Lincoln sites include the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Lincoln Home National Historic Site, Lincoln Tomb, and so on. Also in the Lincoln "All About Abe" (Set) are a few Lincoln sites not located in Springfield.

The Illinois State Fair: My collection of photographs of the Illinois State Fair. The fair offers something for everyone. Grab a corn dog and lemon shake-up, and come take a look!

Beyond Central Illinois: Other locales in the United States and Canada including New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle.

In addition to my location-based sets, here are links to some "topical" collections and sets I've put together:

Barbers & Barber Shops: Traditional barbers and barber shops are on the endangered species list. But there are still plenty to be found if you go looking for them.

Almost Everything Else. Check It Out!!!: Included topics range from man's first walk on the moon to small town schools and churches, and from Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers (our favorite breed) to things that are abandoned, neglected, weathered, or rusty.
