NYC - Midtown: James A. Farley Building - Connecting Offices
office 2010 business
Many of the offices at the James A. Farley Building are connected.

The James A. Farley Building, New York City's General Post Office (Zip Code 10001), located at 421 Eighth Avenue and occupying eight acres across two full city blocks, consists of the old general post office building and its western annex. The Farley Post Office holds the distinction of being the only Post Office in New York City that is open to the public 24 hours/7 days a week.

The James A. Farley Building was constructed in two stages. The original monumental front half, boasting the longest giantr order Corinthian colonnade in the world, was built by William M. Kendall of McKim, Mead & White from 1908-1913 and opened for postal business as the Pennsylvania Terminal in 1914. The imposing design was meant to match in strength the colonnade of Pennsylvania Station that originally faced it across the avenue. An unbroken flight of steps the full length of the colonnade provides access, for the main floor devoted to customer services is above a functional basement level that rises out of a dry moat giving light and air to workspaces below. Each of the square end pavilions is capped with a low saucer dome, expressed on the exterior as a low stepped pyramid.

In July 1918, the building was renamed the General Post Office Building and was doubled in space in 1934 by James Farley, replacing the 1878 Post Office at Park Row and Broadway. In 1982, the building was renamed once more as the James A. Farley Building. Farley was the nation's 53rd Postmaster General and served from 1933 to 1940. As a candidate for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in 1940, he was only the second Roman Catholic to receive delegates towards such a nomination after Alfred E. Smith. Farley also served as a campain manager to both Smith and Franklin D. Roosevelt, and is considered the finest Athletic Commissioner/Boxing Commissioner in New York State history.

The building prominently bears the inscription: "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds." Commonly mistaken as an official motto of the United States Postal Service, it is actually taken from Herodotus' Histories (Book 8, Ch. 98) and describes the faithful service of the Persian system of mounted postal messengers under Xerxes I of Persia.

Moynihan Station, a planned train terminal, would expand Penn Station into the Farley Post Office Building. Plans for the expansion of the the busiest train station in the country, serving more than 550,000 daily passengers, the busiest train station in the country with more than 550,000 daily passengers. It has since gone through a portracted series of delays and redesigns over the years. Phase I of the current plan, "Moynihan Moving Forward", broke ground in 2010 and, with work occuring only on nights and weekends, is expected to be complete by 2016. The phase consists of mostly below-grade, transportation infrastructure improvements including the expansion of the Long Island Rail Road West End Concourse under the Farley building steps to serve Amtrak and New Jersey Transit platforms, new entrances through the Farley Building, and improved ventilation. The second phase includes a sky-lit grand hall with 1 million square feet of retail space. The Farley Building's facade will remain untouched, and it will retain retail postal lobby services . However, all mail processing operations will be relocated one block away to the Morgan Processing and Distribution Center.

The United States General Post Office was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1966.

I wasn't able to get this building before as it was covered in scaffolding and being restored. Now that it is finished I've been able to get some shots of it in Digbeth.

It is Digbeth Court - Business Centre at 162 - 164 High Street Deritend.

I didn't want to wait for the traffic to clear, so I got my shots and moved on. Also it was pretty dull and cloudy.

There used to be graffiti on the wall to the left, but it is now clear.

The Rainbow is still to the right of this building.

It has shops and offices to let.

Visit there website here Digbeth Court

It was officially launched in 2010.

Technically this bit might be on High Street Bordesley (the website lists it as Deritend).

Locally listed in Birmingham - 164 High Street Bordesley is Grade B listed.

Pevsner describes them as two classical shops of cicra 1860.

Hyde Manor (1865)
business listings
Hyde Manor, Sudbury, Vermont USA • This historic vacation destination was popular around the late 19th century up until the middle of the 20th century with its heyday from 1890 to 1940. Now dilapidated, probably beyond repair, this old tourist attraction now sits off to the side of Route 30 staring at the passers-by with it's glassless windows and collapsed porch, an enormous structure that was one of the most beautiful in its day.

From "Pictorial History of Sudbury" I quote the following; "Sudbury's most famous hotel would no doubt be Hyde Manor. Built in the late 1700's and purchased by Pitt W. Hyde in 1801, it grew to become one of the most celebrated in New England. Situated on the Stage Route between Canada and Northern Vermont, and Whitehall and Rutland, it became a favorite resting place for many. Mr. Hyde came to Sudbury as an innkeeper from Hyde Park, Vermont. A son, James, took over the inn upon his father's death in 1823 and under him it became known for it's excellence of fare and for the cheerful and friendly welcome it extended to all of it's guests. James Hyde also served as Town Clerk for thirty years, as justice of the peace for thirty-four years, he represented the town of Sudbury in the General Assembly, was a Senator from Rutland County in 1850-51 and was Assistant Judge of the Rutland County Court."

In 1862 the hotel was destroyed by fire and the present building was erected by James Hyde in 1865. His son, A.W. Hyde then took over the new hotel, which would accommodate two hundred guests and became the perfect resort for families with children. James K. Hyde was later born to A.W. in 1874 and he grew to be the fourth generation to carry on the business and himself produced the fifth and last generation to own the inn. On March 27, 1944 one of the most spectacular fires to ever take place in Sudbury occurred when the 70 room annex of Hyde Manor burned. No official estimates of the loss was at hand, but it was thought to be a ,000 loss (in 1944). The annex was built with the best materials; built entirely of clear wood with no knots and tremendously solid. The floor joists were three by twelve inches in dimension and set at a distance of 10 inches on all floors. The central building, barns and the Hyde Cottages to the North were undamaged by the fire."

In the 1960's the Hyde Manor changed hands and for the first time in over 150 years was no longer in the Hyde family. For a short while it was run as a hotel called the "Top of the Seasons" but with the change in times, so came the change in leisure and it did not do as well as in its prime time. It was (is?) owned by Ed Dlhos who started the Green Mountain Spring Water business using the famous natural springs on the property but that too was short lived as was an attempt to resurrect the golf course on the land. Everything now lies abandoned, rotting and all but forgotten.
– From a terrific post (with historical photos) by Aron Garçeau, in August 2008.

☞ On April 11, 1980, the National Park Service added this structure (also known as Hyde's Hotel) to the National Register of Historic Places (#80000340).

William Bayly Residence, 1900
10 Chester Place
Theodore Eisen

This manor house in it's pastoral setting is a sedate Shingle Style. Built in 1900 by Theodore Eisen, it s perfectly balanced, and demonstrates Eisen's versatility. Although Chester Place, now home to Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles, is not officially a National Register Historic District, it has been approved. The home is now used as administrative offices for the college.
__________

BAYLY, WILLIAM, Mining, Los Angeles, California, is a native of Missouri, having been born at Lexington, that State, in the year 1856. He is the son of Charles B. Bayly and Matilda (Russell) Bayly. He married Eva Houghton at Del Norte, Colorado, in the year 1876, and to them there have been born two children—William Bayly, Jr., and Charles H. Bayly.

Mr. Bayly is one of those successful American business men who did not have opportunity or time to devote to his education before going out into the world to start his life career. His family having moved from Lexington to St. Louis, Missouri, when he was a child, he attended the public schools of the latter city in the Civil War period. At the age of 16 years he gave up his studies and decided to seek his fortune in the West. He went to Colorado and engaged in the hardware business with Alva Adams, a pioneer of Colorado, who afterwards become Governor and is today one of the richest men in the Silver State and one of those who have done much to develop that commonwealth. Between them the two young merchants built up a thriving business.

Mr. Bayly remained in this business for twenty years, during which time he made a considerable fortune. After two decades in the one line, he engaged in the mining business and has been in it ever since. He has mined on an extensive scale in Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California, and today is one of the conspicuous men in the business.

He left Denver in 1895 and went to Los Angeles to establish his home. Since becoming a citizen of the Southern California metropolis he has aided in every movement for the development of the city and Southern California.

He is a member of the California Club of Los Angeles.
