Based on findings in the recent Open Consultation process, this year's Action Line Facilitation meeting on e-business (C7) focuses on electronic commerce (e-commerce) for development. E-commerce is rapidly expanding, but the uptake in many developing countries remains relatively low, especially for SMEs. This session considers the opportunities, barriers and challenges to domestic and cross-border use of e-commerce for trading goods and services by SMEs. It also highlight good practices and promising developments that can serve as inspiration for all stakeholders. An interactive discussion will feature the views of panelists representing governments, international organizations and the private sector as well as comments from the floor. The last part of the session will seek to identify concrete steps forward to accelerate the development contribution of e-commerce.

Those Who Serve
business register
Day one hundred seventy-five/365. Cashiers, beauticians, secretaries, receptionists, wait staff. They're among the people who serve us. They're also among the most underappreciated people in our society.

On a few occasions, when I have been truly impressed by the help I've received from one of these service-oriented people, I've written to the owner or manager of the business, just to commend the person.

I make sure to specify at least one observable reason that I was favorably impressed with the person's work.

Once, the owner of a restaurant gave my letter to the waitress I'd commended. The waitress then wrote to me, asking me to identify myself the next time I was in the restaurant.

I never did. It wouldn't be the same that way.

Would you do that? Would you notice someone's name tag and write to an owner or a manager, pointing out someone's good work? I need to write those letters more often. One person can make a difference. Perhaps we could each vow to write one commendation this month.

Cool Internet Business images

Accra, Ghana - January 6th 2012
internet business
The first ever VC4Africa Meetup in Accra took place at the plush Rhapsodys Pub & Restaurant (located at the Accra Mall) on Friday the 6th of January, 2012. The event was a huge success.

In all, about 65 old and young Entrepreneurs (most from the technology side) and angel investors attended to meet-up and share ideas on ventures being developed and created in Ghana and Africa as a whole

The meet-up started with an informal introduction by event host; Makafui Ayimey who helped put in a lot of time and energy into organizing the event. He explained the main ideas of the VC4Africa Meetup module which is:

- Networking and sharing ideas on viable ventures from Ghana and Africa

- Creating platforms for Entrepreneurs, Investors and Start-ups and also

- Building Africa through networking.

It was the first time Entrepreneurs and Investors were meeting unofficially to dialogue, meet-up in person and also network. A lot of the discussions were focused on the various projects each of the young entrepreneurs were working on and also getting feedback/advice from themselves and the older entrepreneurs.

The format of the event was splendid as everybody who came was very pleased with the unofficial setup which took the unconference form just like Barcamps… Even though there were seats by the bar, most people were busily connecting with names and projects they’ve seen online and were happily chatting the night away.

Herman Chinery-Hesse, popularly known as “African Bill Gate” was at the event to also meet-up and network, offer his advice to the upcoming entrepreneurs and just hang-out with the crowd. He’s got a remarkable story indeed. He is one of those people that makes you feel like you can do anything with nothing. That’s because Herman believes in African style solutions for uniquely African problems.

In an interview he lauded the idea of this type of unofficial Meetups and also suggested, the organizers keep up with it and also organize it once a month. He also stressed on the young entrepreneurs to develop solutions to African problems by saying;

“Europeans and Americans don’t have power failures and bandwidth problems, so Africans can’t copy first world solutions and expect them to work here.”

Spotted at the meet-up were the following; Eric Osiakwan – Director (Internet Research), Herman Chinery-Hesse – Chairman (SOFTtribe Ltd), Foster Ofosu – Founder (Africa Works), Tim Akinbo - Founder (TimbaObjects Company ), Derrydean Dadzie – Co-founder (DreamOval Ltd), Ato Ulzen-Appiah – co-founder (Museke) and Edward Amartey-Tagoe – co-founder (NandiMobile Ltd).

A couple of Ghanaian bloggers were also there to listen and share with others, their views on the entrepreneurial and technology scene currently making the news in the country.

At exactly 21:00 GMT, the event came to a close but a few people stayed behind for awhile. Most of the conversations right after was manly on; how soon the next meet-up will be organized and if there were any special requirements.

Focus on small business

Focus on small business

By Dave Palmer

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles County Post of the Society of American Military Engineers held a small business forum and monthly organizational meeting Nov. 8.

The morning featured panel discussions focusing on small business, many veteran-owned, and how they can team with federal agencies and the Department of Defense in nearly a half-a-billion dollars in small business contracts the District awards annually.

"In the panel discussions we had small business experts from federal and local agencies discussing how small businesses can get work," said Deputy District Commander Lt. Col. Steve Sigloch. "We had an attorney with 30-years in the business of dealing with all the regulations pertaining to small business. He briefed that in the past year almost 300 pages of updates were made, he went into some detail of those updates so small businesses are better prepared, better educated on how to qualify as a small business."

The guest speaker for the meeting, Brig. Gen. Ted Harrison, the Director of the National Contracting Organization, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has a wide range of contracting and procurement experience. For his talk, he focused on operational and contract support planning for emergency and contingency operations.

"As you well know the Corps of Engineers executes its mission by leveraging a very vibrant commercial sector through contracting support in just about every mission area," said Harrison. "On any given day, approximately 300,000 contract employees actively support our various projects around the world."

"Contingency operations, by their very nature, require a very short response time," he said. "Any contract support planning you can do ahead of time, before disasters strike or a contingency occurs, makes execution much more effective."

The past year was an exceptional one. The Corps of Engineers managed emergency operations from extreme flooding along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers to severe tornados in Alabama and Missouri.

"We have a series of contracts for our FEMA support mission that are called advance contractor initiatives," said Harrison. "They're in place now for large scale debris removal, ice and water, temporary housing and power generation. These are the missions that the Corps of Engineers has to support FEMA in disaster response and recovery. We also utilize small businesses in a great way in many of these contracts."

"We met and exceeded all of our goals, in contracting with small business, this past year," added Sigloch. "For fiscal year 2012 we're increasing goals by at least a percentage point or two in each category, based on historical past practice."

"You really have a commitment from the Chief of Engineers, right on down to the Districts that want to engage with you, that want to understand more about how you like to do business, and what our needs are and open dialog with you," Harrison added.

Along the Dōtonbori Canal. The world's first large Ferris wheel with oval-shaped, oblong-style outer track was recently opened for business along the promenade 'Tonbori River Walk' being built on both sides of the Dotonbori River in Minami, Osaka City.
The 77-meter-tall Ferris wheel has been created in the compounds of the Dotonbori shop of Don Quijote Co., LTD., a volume sales company. In the center of the oval-shaped track, there is a huge model of 'Ebessan,' a god for business prosperity.
Thirty-two gondolas each capable of accommodating four people in a row make a round in about 15 minutes. The wheel is opened from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. the next day.
The 1.3-kilometer promenade is being built between the Minatomachi River Place in Naniwa Ward and the Kamiyamatobashi bridge in Chuo Ward for completion in fiscal 2010 as a key symbol in Osaka City's water metropolis project.
