Are we just rearranging the deck-chairs on the titanic

This morning I attended my first Fine Gael press conference. For some strange reason Fine Gael have decided to use orange tinted lights so all of the photographs that I took had a yellow hue … I have tried to adjust the white balance to compensate.

We are in the early stages of the campaign and already I am becoming somewhat depressed because it would appear that none of the parties are offering the sort of radical solutions that we need and I don't understand why they are all latching onto "clouding computing" as a solution. In the context of our overpowering economic crisis I really wonder what problem is solved by cloud computing? [Note: The Streets Of Dublin employs cloud computing]

Maybe Ireland's current economic problem has no solution and we are just undertaking a pointless exercise similar to rearranging the deck-chairs on the titanic. That is a horrible thought.

FG sets out extensive plan to tackle jobs crisis & rebuild economy – Bruton & Varadkar

Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny has today (Thursday) launched Working for Our Future, the Party’s plans to create tens of thousands of new jobs over five years. The plan was prepared by the Fine Gael Enterprise, Jobs & Economic Planning Spokesman Richard Bruton and Communications, Energy & Natural Resources Spokesman Leo Varadkar.

Speaking at the launch, Deputy Bruton said: ‘Fine Gael’s jobs plan, Working for Our Future, is based on keeping people in work within Ireland, making it easier to start up new businesses, making Ireland a better place to do business, and helping more Irish businesses to look beyond our borders and sell on a global scale’.

Deputy Varadkar said: ‘The only strategy that can, and will work is a hard-headed political strategy. This will involve an investment plan which doesn’t rely on borrowing and taxation. Our revised NewERA plan will invest an additional €7 billion in revenue generating infrastructure like energy, broadband, and water’.

Key points

· Competitiveness: no direct tax hikes on jobs or enterprise; no income tax hikes, including PRSI and USC; employment law will be consolidated; consider a single business tax for micro businesses; simplify tax registration for start-ups; maintain the 12.5% corporation tax rate, cut the Jobs Tax (employers’ PRSI) for the lower paid; cut VAT in labour-intensive sectors of the economy like construction, hospitality, hairdressing, and newspapers.
· Building a modern economy: NewERA will invest €7 billion from NPRF and sale of State assets in water, broadband and energy, lowering business costs and improving competitiveness.
· Youth unemployment: 45,000 placements including National Internship Programme places in private and voluntary sectors; Second Chance Education for former retail & construction workers who did not complete their education; new opportunities for apprentices.
· Reduce business costs: slash €500M worth of red tape, tackle closed sectors like transport, medical, waste & legal services; address out-of-date pay structures in certain sectors; support start-ups by simplifying tax registration.
· Boost exporting companies: tax credits to multinational companies which support exporting Irish companies; service companies that export more than 90% of their output will be VAT exempt; a new Asia Strategy to treble trade between Ireland and Asia by 2025.

Deputy Bruton & Varadkar said: ‘Fine Gael is the only political party to put forward a comprehensive jobs and growth policy of this nature. The Labour party seems to think that extending austerity to 2016 will bring about higher growth. It won’t. The outgoing Fianna Fáil/Green Government has produced nothing but vague plans with woolly targets. Fianna Fáil’s constant attacks on Fine Gael policies are only an attempt to cover up the lack of any credible jobs plan from the Government’.

On Lufthansa B747-400 Business Class seats there is a 100V AC power outlet. Yet the outlet is not a standard depth, so normal laptop or other electronic device power plugs do not always work.

As advised by the Purser, the only adapter that will work is this the Wonpro WA-9A adapter - its pins are 3/4 inch or 19 mm long and can reach the electricity source in the power outlet.

Coup de Entourage?
doing business as
First, let me express my admiration of the design and quality of this paint job. The downward slanting backdrop and headline give a feeling of motion that is fitting for a step van. The orange and black with red accent create strong contrast that you can't miss. When I first saw it I thought that Entourage was doing some tour on the Penn campus and turned to look for Vince and Turtle.

Secondly, what the hell is this? What happened to Coup de Taco? (see their earlier paint job here: www.flickr.com/photos/ezraw/4298284505/in/set-72057594077...). I hope it was a financial crisis, because that's about the only way I could forgive such an affront to my (and hopefully the public's) esthetic expectations for food trucks and the relationship they have with the neighborhoods in which they do business.

If you look through my step van set (www.flickr.com/photos/ezraw/sets/72057594077391068/with/4...) what you might notice is that the lunch truck step van is an expression of identity for this unusual category of small business. The emphasis in nearly all non-delivery fleet step vans is on individuality, often shown using typography or color. Even those who choose not to paint their vans have customized them in ways that are unique.

The step van food truck is the rare business that comes with two huge signs out front that can be painted however the owner likes. I don't even think zoning has any say. Most owners take advantage of this to create a visual identity. A food truck "brand." Since all step vans are nearly the same size and shape, there's really no other way to do this. For example, see Rami, right next door serving middle eastern food (www.flickr.com/photos/ezraw/4298271579/in/set-72057594077...) or Suzi with the chef's face drawn on the side (www.flickr.com/photos/ezraw/3168385047/in/set-72057594077...) or bright pink Denise's (www.flickr.com/photos/ezraw/3086759419/in/set-72057594077...) or the recently famous cupcake lady running Philadelphia Buttercream ( www.flickr.com/photos/ezraw/4508902913/in/set-72057594077... ).

To change identities so suddenly and dramatically is to invite confusion and possibly alienate customers by removing a familiar signpost of their daily routine. No to mention, and possibly most importantly, how could anyone possibly know what the Entourage truck sells? Only if you look carefully can you see the Coup de Taco logo is hiding out in the bottom left.

Third. It's boring. You could put this on a billboard and I wouldn't look twice.

There's almost no difference between the experience I have with a truck like this and a portable sign board truck like this: www.flickr.com/photos/jag9889/3457265350/. Both are totally unrelated to what's happening inside and insult the neighborhood around it. At least the sign board truck moves along. Coup de Taco seems to say, "I care so little about my relationship with the neighborhood that I'm willing to risk it for money."

At least the sign truck and billboard declare their commercial intent up front. "Look at me, i'm an advertisement," they say. "See me for what I am." But this lunch truck fooled us. It said, "I'm a taco van, I'll park here every day, and we can have a relationship. I'll be a part of the neighborhood and you can eat here too." But then we wake up one morning to hear, "Oh no, wait, sorry, I'm also an advertisement for an HBO show. But I'm not leaving either. Sorry you had a some romantic notion about me respecting you. Just keep looking at Ari and buying tacos and we'll get along fine."

So, should we boycott Coup de Taco for this slap in the face of visual step van vernacular? For me, it's a moot point as I don't work near it, and it's usually not open when I pass by, so I've never eaten there. Also, as a partner in a small business myself, I wouldn't want to damage the income of the owner, who certainly seems like a nice guy (his blog: coupdetaco.wordpress.com/). But I certainly would understand if someone did. That said, part of the appeal and identity of Philadelphia for me is the crazy melange of signs and storefronts all over town. I would never want to squelch that fire, nor the choice of each business person to do what he or she wants with their exterior, but I sure would hate it if we all ended up with signs like these on food trucks all over town.

Can't wait until this is gone and we see the old Coup de Taco back soon.

PS, I got a close look last night, and this is a vinyl vehicle wrap, which is actually pretty cool and nearly invisible unless you look very closely. Would be interesting to see vans put these on and change up designs every year.

Despite the party-style enivornment people are working, deals are getting done & there are winners and losers. It's the end of business as usual.

keeping company
business to business companies
As much as anything else a business is a social organism. That is why I think the term ‘company’ is so fitting. We build relationships around work and the folks at work keep us company while we go about our business. I think too often that’s what slides on by analysts and economists when they try to explain this massive dislocation in jobs. They talk in terms of jobs added or subtracted during the current month, boiling down all of this action to a few abstract numbers. Numbers may help you keep score, but they cannot provide the narrative and tell the story in meaningful terms.

I look at these shuttered enterprises across this once great city and I can’t help but imagine the scene on the last day work was performed inside the brittle walls. The week likely began with a small crew hanging around to fill the last orders on the books. These orders were filled with the same care as if the business was still a going concern. Pride and love found in the working folks hanging on until the end wouldn’t allow it any other way. On the last day, boxes were packed in a deliberate, day- dreamy manner. Plaques, awards, team photos are held gently as they spark fond memories. Sometime around 3:00 10, 20, 30 years of work are tucked into an old copy paper box. People awkwardly hug while trying to hold onto their boxes. A few tears are shed. Words of reassurance, “it will be alright”, are shared. The light switch is turned off and the door closes for the last time. More than a job was lost.

Danville IL - Bresee Tower, 4 N. Vermilion St. (3 of 3)
small business loan
Completed in 1918 by the First National Bank of Danville, this 12-story "fireproof" building was built at a cost of 0,000, and remained the home of FNB until 1955. The bank occupied the first floor, mezzanine and lower level. Upper floors were occupied by the offices of doctros, dentists, lawyers, stock brokers, and loan companies.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2000, Bresee Tower looks like a structure that is in bad need of repair. Vacant since 2005, in recent years barricades were placed on the south and east sides of the tower due to concern over falling debris. Today strapping and plywood is seen on the exterior to limit the potential of falling pieces of terra cotta.

Over the past two years, work has been completed to deal with the most hazardous aspects of the structure. While the future of this landmark remains uncertain, restoring and converting the property into some type of mixed use space is a possibility.

The City of Danville is the seat of Vermilion County, and is located in East Central Illinois near the Indiana border. The population of Danville was 33,027 as of the 2010 census.

More photographs of Danville can be found in my "Danville IL" set.

Every city and town I've photographed is contained within its own set, and rural (as in "countryside") photographs are grouped by county.

Springfield, Illinois: All of my photographs of Springfield and the Abraham Lincoln Sites are in this collection. For the City of Springfield, there are separate sets for the Capitol Complex, Downtown (including the Old State Capitol), Neighborhoods, Parks, Illinois State Fairgrounds (and past State Fairs), and more. Photographs of Lincoln sites include the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Lincoln Home National Historic Site, Lincoln Tomb, and so on. Beyond Central Illinois: Other locales in the United States and Canada including New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle.

In addition to my location-based sets, here are links to some "topical" collections and sets I've put together:

Failing Up in Business

Barry Moltz, Author, Bounce!
Moderator Cassie Phillips

Mistakes can serve as learning tools, and sometimes enhance your career.

Conventional wisdom teaches us that the road to business success is a straight one - if you work hard you'll win big, and if failure finds you at least there will be lessons to be learned. Not so, says entrepreneurship expert Barry Moltz, who regularly serves up unorthodox views on dealing with failure and defining success. In Bounce!, Moltz teaches that sometimes failure simply stinks. But if we recognize failure as a fixture of the business cycle and an opportunity for choice and change, we can build the business confidence needed to go the distance in a challenging economy. Failing certainly isn't fun, but with Moltz's tools you can bounce beyond, not just back.

Wagner became the first American ace of World War II when he shot down six Japanese aircraft in the Philippines in mid-December 1941.

Curtiss-Wright built this airplane as Model 87-A3 and delivered it to Canada as a Kittyhawk I in 1941. It served until 1946 in No. 111 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force. U.S. Air Force personnel at Andrews Air Force Base restored it in 1975 to represent an aircraft of the 75th Fighter Squadron, 23rd Fighter Group, 14th Air Force.

The Family As Silhouette

This weekend we had our biannual family meeting in Brugge, Belgium. The main issue was - if there was one - how we can assure long term assets to the family business.

Cousin F. start talking about new media. And cousine K. got interested in my professional silhouette cutter and was thinking maybe we can all join up here.

She immediately jumped into position to show she has modelling qualities in the silhouette range. I do not disagree, but next session she should get rid of the bag.

Do You Think This Was A Sign Of Disrespect?

I recently saw a photo my friend Nancylynnfree posted on her wall. It
was of a hummingbird doing her business while in flight. I did not
know I had gotten this shot until we got home. I did remember this
osprey lifting its behind at us, and thought it was mooning us in bird
fashion. Little did I know, I had caught it doing more than that.
Nancy, this one is for you to enjoy, as you shared yours with all of
us, to get a kick out of as well. Lets see who else shares these
shots. Enjoy getting the laughs God brings us through nature.
