Vesuvio Café in North Beach, San Francisco.

Photographs in this collection have been produced by Heather Do, Connor Rowe, Kathleen Markham, Alison Lowrie, Kenneth Chiu, Katie Salmond, Diana Chavez, Elena Toffalori, Ashley Vink, Aimee O'Dea, Liz Dolinar, Allison Barden, Justine Khoury, Daniele Alaniz-Roux, and Justin Thach at the request of Michael Ashley for the UC Berkeley Anthropology 136e class, Spring 2011. The purpose was to digitally document the cultural heritage of Vesuvio Café to not only document the cultural history embeded into the ageless walls but also to connect spatially the symbiotic relationship that preserves the legacy of beatnik culture today.

Vesuvio Cafe, (37.79757°N 122.40625°W), located in the North Beach region of San Francisco Bay, is a cultural bastion preserving the cultural heritage of bohemian era and the beatnik culture that generated its establishment by Henri Lenoir in 1949 and made infamous by the renown authors such as Jack Kerouac from which the adjacent alley is named. The building in which the bar is housed is otherwise known as the Cavalri building built in 1913 and expanded to a second story in 1918 and designed by Zanolini with Italian Renaissance revival elements. The transient existence of these unkempt literary members and their constituents is reflected in the liminal location of the former saloon restaurant at the border between the vagrant Chinese- Italian communities; by 1970[1], most of the diverse cultures regressed into economical housing . Vesuvio Café despite its rich history back to the 1950’s , are not historically preserved site; in fact, they were rented until 1999[2] by managers Chris and Janet Clyde, whose proprietary hopes to protect the building from other commercial interest. Over the years, Vesuvio has undergone its share of renovations and damages such as the 1999 retrofitting for earthquake safety or even the 1973 damage dealt to the building by an errant bus[3]. Over the years, the "I'll never forget after the retro-fitting, one man came in, he was about 55 years old and in a business suit," Clyde said. "He actually had tears in his eyes when he looked at the place. He said, `You didn't change anything.' Vesuvio has kept its character as a neighborhood bar.”[4]

Photographs in this collection were shot on April 11, 2011 between 7:30 am and 5:00 pm Pacific Time under variable natural lighting due to cloudy skies with intermittent periods of morning exposure conditions. Photos were captured on the following cameras: Canon DSLR XTI/T2i, S95, Sony Cybershot, Canon Powershot. Lenses used include: Macro 60mm, Telephoto 70-200, Canon T2i 18-55mm, Canon XTI 17-85mm. A tripod was used for timelapse, Gigapan, macro, telephoto, HDR, and photogrammetry shots. iPhones were also used for documentation shots and Geo-tagging. The photos were post-processed in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.

BEWARE of this EVIL company! A 00 estimate for a job I paid 5 for!

I recently called 16 companies for some roofing work. 9 of them made appointments with me, 7 showed up, and 5 sent me estimates, plus an estimate sent by someone who wouldn't even come out, which I wouldn't even consider. The 5 estimates were 5, 5, 5/75, 50, and 00 (Sam And Sons estimate).

We got the job successfully completed for 5. Had we chosen Sam And Sons, we would have gotten the same work done, but been out AN ADDITIONAL FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS.

***** In all my life, I think this is one of the most evil things any company has ever tried to do. They tried to charge us ALMOST TEN TIMES what the job was worth. *****

It is now my mission to save people from this evil company by posting this.

My GUESS as to what happened? The guy actually had the gall to ask me if I inherited the house -- I guess I wasn't dressed nice enough for him to think I earned it myself at age 24. So, figuring I was a spoiled brat who didn't know the value of a dollar, he tried to screw me.

Your plan backfired, bud.

I can only imagine that this company probably takes advantage of the elderly, who in their dementia also often lose the concept of the value of a dollar. I can only imagine what would happen if I was the type of person to only get one estimate. What pieces of utter fucking shit they are.

But they would not do this themselves, despite accepting the job. Thus, Clint had to embark on the experience of finding someone to do the job. Undated -- The Federal Communications Commission is cracking down on 'cramming'. Obviously, we're not talking about pulling an all-nighter in hopes of acing your college finals. It's a term used for unauthorized fees on your cell phone bill. And it's possible you've paid them - without even knowing it.

Samantha Malone opened her cell phone bill and discovered she'd been charged for a game she never ordered. "I saw a charge I think it was for .99 and I didn't ever remember subscribing to anything that would warrant that charge."

Malone was a victim of cramming -- unauthorized charges that mysteriously appear on monthly phone bills. The FCC estimates Malone is one of 20 million Americans who've been schemed that way.

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said, "The charges can be for voice mail or long distance that the consumer didn't request." The charges usually range from .99 to .99, but only about 5% of consumers realize they're being ripped off because the fees are hard to spot.

Regulators are now working on new rules to crack down on the problem, and they're setting up a tip sheet that will be available on www.fcc.gov to help people recognize and report suspicious charges. Genachowski said, "You can call a third party charge, that number should be on the bill, or call your phone company." Consumers should ask questions like: Do I recognize the names of all of the companies listed on my bill? Are there charges for calls I did not place or products or services I did not authorize?

Are the rates I am being charged consistent with the rates I signed up for? If you need help resolving your dispute,
you can contact the FCC at www.fcc.gov/complaints, or call 1-888-CALL-FCC (1-888-225-5322).

Malone says her phone company didn't help her, but her credit card company resolved the problem.

Last week, the FCC recommended more than million in fines against four companies: Main Street Telephone, VoiceNet Telephone, LLC, Cheap2Dial Telephone, LLC., and Norristown Telephone, LLC. They're all accused of billing tens of thousands of consumers for unauthorized charges.

[UPDATE] Video Voyeur Accused of "Up-Skirting" Dozens of Women 2-14 Noon
Video Voyeurism? Man Arrested for Grocery Cart Camera

www.wctv.tv/home/headlines/Video_Voyeurism_Man_Arrested_f...

UPDATED 2.14.2012 6:30pm by Julie Montanaro

A Tallahassee man is accused of secretly videotaping beneath the skirts of dozens of women.

Charles Korst was initially arrested for an incident at the Publix sushi counter.

A review of his computer hard drive revealed 88 "up-skirt" videos and court records indicate one of them is of a girl as young as 10.

Police went to Charles Korst's home in search of a camera. They found an external hard drive taped to the back of his dresser. On it, they say, were dozens of videos that showed women's faces and the view beneath their skirts.

"It's shocking and it's violating," said shopper Jessica Koon. "I I come here all the time, run in, run out, and would have never suspected anybody of doing anything like that."

"I think it's outrageous for someone to want do something so egregious as to look up someone's dress," said fellow shopper Tongy Rodriguez. "Get him off the street."

Arrest papers show Korst "skirted the law' most often at Publix, but investigators say there were shoppers at Best Buy, Target, Wal Mart, Home Depot and Bed Bath and Beyond who were captured on tape by the accused video voyeur.

Perhaps the most shocking? Arrest papers say at least two of the victims were children under 16.

Court papers show Korst followed a young teen in Home Depot for more than 16 minutes taking at least 8 shots beneath her skirt and even removing the camera from the basket to get a full body shot.

The other young victim is estimated to be between 10 and 12 years old. That video appears to be taken in the toy aisle at Wal Mart.

"He wouldn't have been lasting long in the aisles had I seen somebody trying to do something like that. I think people need to pay more attention to their kids," said shopper Brian Durham, "and people need to pay attention to the surroundings."

Arrest papers say some of the video clips even include full or partial views of Korst's own face.

Most of the videos were taken between February and October of 2011.
Korst is accused of videotaping as many as six women in one day.

Police also found what they say are three pornographic pictures of young children on Korst's computer hard drive.

He is facing 86 misdemeanors and five felonies. His bond is set at ,000.

Korst's attorney had no comment on the most recent charges.

UPDATED 2.14.2012 9:30am by Julie Montanaro

A Tallahassee man arrested for video voyeurism last month is now facing dozens of new charges.

Charles Korst is facing 86 new charges of video voyeurism (misdemeanors), two counts of video voyeurism on a child under 16 (felonies) and three counts of possession of child pornography (felonies).

Prosecutor Jon Fuchs says the charges were filed after a review of Korst's computer hard drive. He says there were even more videos on the computer, but he pressed charges only for videos that showed beneath women's skirts or showed women's undergarments.

Fuchs says the videos appear to be taken at stores all over town, including Home Depot, Walmart and Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

Korst was arrested last month outside the Lake Ella Publix after a woman reported he was using a camera in his grocery basket to try to film up her skirt.

Korst is slated to make an appearance before a judge this morning.

Fuchs says investigators do not beleive Korst created the images of child pornography. He says those appear to be downloaded images.

A Tallahassee man is accused of stashing a camera in his grocery basket and trying to take pictures beneath a woman's skirt. He was caught and we soon discovered this was not his first venture time.

It happened at the Lake Ella Publix just after noon on Monday.

TPD arrest papers say a woman at the sushi counter first noticed a man's handheld grocery basket brushing up against her leg. She didn't want it to snag her pantyhose, arrest papers say, so she moved. Then it happened again and when she turned around she noticed a camera in the corner of his basket "with the lens extended."

Tallahassee Police arrested Charles Korst in the parking lot soon afterward on charges of video voyeurism.

"I find it shocking that someone would even do such a thing honestly. I'm just glad that the woman ran him off and he was caught," said Publix shopper Anna Smith.

A check of Leon County court records shows Korst has been arrested for voyeurism seven times. Most of them are misdemeanors and they date back to 2004.

WCTV did a story on him in 2006 when he was accused of taking pictures of women in the fitting room at Target.

Court records indicate that over the years he's done 10 days in jail, been on probation, done community service and even entered a treatment program.

This time, he's charged with a felony.

"It makes you angry that he hasn't learned his lesson. So maybe we need to teach him a lesson," shopper Connie Walberg said as she loaded groceries into her car.

"The authorities definitely need to know where he's at all the time. There's no telling what this guy is capable of doing. It may lead to something else," shopper Steven Walker said.

Korst was released from jail on 00 bond. His attorney Bill Davis says he does not comment on a pending case and has no comment on Korst's past run ins with the law.

You know even going through felony arrests on WCTV it seems you see at least one sexual predator a week if not more. I think spending taxpayers dollars would be a good idea in these cases. No, not for the jail time, but see that every sexual predator never has the chance to do anything stupid again. Make them unics, nothing there, nothing to think about or try doing.....

The American Marketing Association (AMA) and the American Marketing Association Foundation (AMAF) honored three nonprofit marketing leaders at its Nonprofit Marketing Conference in Chicago, IL, on July 16, 2009. Eric Overman, Operation Smile, received the Nonprofit Marketer of the Year Award, and Anne Bergquist, YMCA of Metro Chicago, and David J. Neff, American Cancer Society High Plains, received the Special Marketing Initiatives and Social Media subcategory awards, respectively. The AMA/AMAF Nonprofit Marketer of the Year Awards honor extraordinary leadership and achievement in the field of nonprofit marketing.

Eric Overman is Director of Online Communities and Social Media at Operation Smile (www.operationsmile.org), an international medical charity dedicated to mobilizing a world of generous hearts to heal children’s smiles and transform lives across the globe.

Since joining the organization in 2006, Eric has launched its first Online and Interactive department, promoted integrated marketing programs, and introduced new technologies to increase donor engagement and empower supporters to also become advocates and fundraisers. These efforts generated 30 percent annual online revenue growth and resulted in email list growth of 500 percent. Eric is currently launching branded online communities and leading the charge to integrate social media into the marketing mix, as well as deploying an internal social business software platform to enhance global communications.

Eric’s blog, Disrupt IT (www.ericoverman.com), explores the impact of the emerging disruptive technologies and media on the nonprofit world. Eric lives in Virginia Beach, VA, with his wife, Karen, and two children. He serves as president-elect of the Hampton Roads American Marketing Association and holds an MBA from William & Mary’s Mason School of Business.

Anne Bergquist, Vice President of Brand Management and Marketing for the YMCA of Metro Chicago (www.ymcachgo.org), joined the Y in 2002. She is responsible for the Y’s brand image through its corporate marketing program that drives annual membership revenue in excess of million from more than 120,000 members at 19 branches across Chicagoland.

In addition to the corporate marketing strategy, Anne directs the development and execution of the marketing plans at each YMCA membership branch, enabling customization with consistent brand identity using guerrilla marketing, advertising, and promotional tactics at the local level. As a result of her efforts, from 2003 to 2006 the Y grew membership revenue by million and increased retention by 11 percent.

During her tenure at the Y, Anne restructured the corporate marketing department to function as an in-house agency serving 19 membership branches, six Human Services programs, and four resident camps. She also developed a comprehensive graphic design/copy template system for membership marketing, retention, and fundraising materials, ensuring maximized internal resources and consistent brand identity across the association. In addition, Anne developed and directed the Y’s first image awareness campaign tied to the YMCA’s 150th anniversary in 2008.

Anne has a BA in American Studies from the University of Notre Dame. She and her husband, Kent, reside in Chicago.

David J. Neff is the Director of Web, Film and Interactive Strategy for the American Cancer Society's High Plains division (www.cancer.org) and is also the Executive Director of Lights. Camera. Help (www.lightscamerahelp.com).

In his capacity at the American Cancer Society, David directs all Web and interactive strategies and online properties for six states in addition to managing the division's eRevenue strategy, social networking/media strategy, and online community strategy. As the executive director of Lights. Camera. Help, he is working to start the world's first nonprofit-focused film festival.

David is a two-time recipient of a Futuring and Innovations grant, which he used to create C-Tools and SharingHope.TV (www.sharinghope.tv). C-Tools was the first PDA software tool for the prevention of cancer developed by the American Cancer Society, and SharingHope.TV is the nonprofit world's first totally user-generated content Web site. In 2009, the Austin American Statesman recognized David as one of the top 25 Social Media People in the state of Texas.

David earned his BS in Public Relations from the University of Texas with a minor in Business from the McCombs School of Business. He currently lives in Austin, TX.

Los Angeles District Business Open House

Open house for business opportunities
By Dave Palmer

LOS ANGELES -- During an open house July 25, more than 200 business owners met division chiefs and project managers from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District to learn about contract opportunities and, in some cases, simply to learn, how to get started in doing business with the Corps.

Based on the sheer size of the District’s area of responsibility, 226,000 square miles across Southern California, southern Nevada, a slice of Utah and all of Arizona, leadership feels it would be cost prohibitive to get everyone involved in the project process out to job sites to meet the contract partners.

“You really have to develop those relationships with the companies that do the work for us,” said Col. Mark Toy, District commander. “It’s (open house) a very efficient way for our contractors to meet everybody.”

Major District projects are diverse; as construction of the border fence for Department of Homeland Security, rehabilitation of Veterans Affairs facilities, the California High-Speed Rail and the world’s largest groundwater recharge system in Orange County, Calif.

“Hopefully we’re seeing a lot of partnering and mentoring going on between larger and smaller companies,” added Toy. “Not only are we increasing the opportunities, for these companies to work with the Corps, we’re also creating a platform for them to do this partnering amongst themselves. And that’s a good thing, too.”

The open house was held in two sessions, morning and afternoon, in the District's Emergency Operations Center and adjoining conference room with project and program displays and brochures listing various interdisciplinary branches of the Corps.

Constantine Historic Commercial District, Constantine, Saint Joseph County
register business
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 17, 1985, the Constantine Historic Commercial District comprises five acres in the original, two-block core of the Village of Constantine's historic and contemporary central business district. The district contains thirty-four commercial and residential structures, the majority of which represent nicely preserved examples of mid-nineteenth to early twentieth century Greek Revival and Italianate styles. The commercial buildings are between one and three stories in height. The Greek revival structures are covered in asphalt shingle, aluminum siding, and painted clapboard with rectangular facade openings, gable ends with returns, and simple classical lines. The dominant Italianate brick blocks display elaborate bracketed cornices, round or segmental-arched windows with hoodmolds or other decorative accents, central roofline pediments, pilastered entry bays, transoms or fanlights, and large display windows.

The Constantine Historic Commercial District derives its significance from both historic and architectural features. Founded in 1828, the Village of Constantine soon became a major regional port for shipping agricultural products east and receiving return shipments for local merchants. Among the important persons associated with Constantine's economic development was former Michigan governor and state senator John S. Barry (1842-1846, 1850-1851), whose river trade and mercantile interests centered in the village. Several Greek Revival structures remain from the period, among them Barry's original warehouse. The prosperity established during Constantine's river trade era carried over into the 1870s when local residents financed a number of handsomely detailed Italianate commercial blocks. Despite alterations to street level facades, Constantine's commercial center remains remarkable for the elegance and historic character of its nineteenth and early twentieth century downtown structures.
