VC4Africa Meetup Santa Monica, California
doing business as
In lead to a business conference focused on doing business in Africa (at the University of California at Los Angeles - UCLA), Patrick Terry stepped forward in the effort to organize the first VC4Africa Meetup in Santa Monica.

The first VC4Africa Meetup was held at Katch the Sun in Kampala, Uganda on June 30th, 2009. We had about 25 members show up and spent several hours networking and getting to know more about one another!

The energy and enthusiasm for this meeting really tapped into this idea that we should be connecting anywhere and everywhere people want to come together and talk about all of the opportunities and possibilities in Africa.

The VC4Africa meetup concept was born and we have now seen members take similar initiatives across the world. As of 2011 more than 25 meetups have been organized and counting....

Quoting Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum | Vought F4U-1D Corsair :

By V-J Day, September 2, 1945, Corsair pilots had amassed an 11:1 kill ratio against enemy aircraft. The aircraft's distinctive inverted gull-wing design allowed ground clearance for the huge, three-bladed Hamilton Standard Hydromatic propeller, which spanned more than 4 meters (13 feet). The Pratt and Whitney R-2800 radial engine and Hydromatic propeller was the largest and one of the most powerful engine-propeller combinations ever flown on a fighter aircraft.

Charles Lindbergh flew bombing missions in a Corsair with Marine Air Group 31 against Japanese strongholds in the Pacific in 1944. This airplane is painted in the colors and markings of the Corsair Sun Setter, a Marine close-support fighter assigned to the USS Essex in July 1944.

Quoting Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum | Curtiss P-40E Warhawk (Kittyhawk IA):

Whether known as the Warhawk, Tomahawk, or Kittyhawk, the Curtiss P-40 proved to be a successful, versatile fighter during the first half of World War II. The shark-mouthed Tomahawks that Gen. Claire Chennault's "Flying Tigers" flew in China against the Japanese remain among the most popular airplanes of the war. P-40E pilot Lt. Boyd D. Wagner became the first American ace of World War II when he shot down six Japanese aircraft in the Philippines in mid-December 1941.

Curtiss-Wright built this airplane as Model 87-A3 and delivered it to Canada as a Kittyhawk I in 1941. It served until 1946 in No. 111 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force. U.S. Air Force personnel at Andrews Air Force Base restored it in 1975 to represent an aircraft of the 75th Fighter Squadron, 23rd Fighter Group, 14th Air Force.

The Family As Silhouette

This weekend we had our biannual family meeting in Brugge, Belgium. The main issue was - if there was one - how we can assure long term assets to the family business.

Cousin F. start talking about new media. And cousine K. got interested in my professional silhouette cutter and was thinking maybe we can all join up here.

She immediately jumped into position to show she has modelling qualities in the silhouette range. I do not disagree, but next session she should get rid of the bag.

I recently saw a photo my friend Nancylynnfree posted on her wall. It
was of a hummingbird doing her business while in flight. I did not
know I had gotten this shot until we got home. I did remember this
osprey lifting its behind at us, and thought it was mooning us in bird
fashion. Little did I know, I had caught it doing more than that.
Nancy, this one is for you to enjoy, as you shared yours with all of
us, to get a kick out of as well. Lets see who else shares these
shots. Enjoy getting the laughs God brings us through nature.

The following text is a copy/paste of some un-copyrighted interesting stuff to taste and enjoy:

---

Excerpt from Leo Babauta's blog:

I am not a brewer

I’ve been learning a bit about beers lately (and enjoying the learning process) and on the top beer ratings sites a beer from the Westvleteren Brewery tops the rankings.

It’s a Belgium beer brewed by monks who absolutely fascinate me. They brew the best beer in the world and yet seem to care nothing about business. As their beer has gained fame they refuse to raise production to meet demand. They refuse to market their beers and have no label on their bottles. They do no advertising and don’t allow interviews or tours of their brewery — you can visit a visitors’ center across the street but they don’t want to be bothered. You can only buy two cases at a time and you have to drive to their brewery to get it — and only after reserving via phone.

They are crazy dudes but I love them. They are not interested in making money or fame or accomplishments. They just want to be monks.

Father Abbott said on the occasion of the consecration of their new brewery “But we do not live ‘for’ our brewery. This must be strange for business people and difficult to understand that we do not exploit our commercial assets as much as we can.”

He went on to say “We are no brewers. We are monks. We brew beer to be able to afford being monks.”

I’m with him.

Obviously before the last Conclave:

... Over the last few weeks some have asked who I think the next Pope would be. I have stated all along that I had three or four favorites judging by how evil this church needs to get next if they hope to enforce their mark. Out of those favorites I saw two that stand out rather boldly. Cardinal Francis Arinze, a black man who declared openly Christ is not needed to gain Heaven. And Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger who heads the office of Inquisition that Pope John Paul II re-instated back in February of 1991, who also declared Christ not needed. I have said repeatedly that if there were only these two to choose from, I am positive Ratzinger would get the vote. As some of you that frequent the POGM Chat rooms know, I started the research a few days before Ratzinger was elected because I felt he was going to get to the job. Why? He was a Nazi soldier as well as one of Hitler’s youth. You do the math. To have a man with such an evil past as his, one can only assume he is Rome’s favourite. A babe in Christ that studies prophecy could have figured this one out. Looking to John Paul II and the fact he sold cyanide to the Nazi’s for killing Jews, one can see it’s a good bet they would elect Ratzinger all along. In fact, there were many articles in the media beforehand proclaiming him the favorite to win. And we all thought it was a SECRET conclave eh? ...

Pope John Paul II: Zyklon B Salesman
by TONY BUSHBY

In his book 'Behold a Pale Horse,' former US Naval Intelligence Officer William Cooper relates a story associated with the IG Farben Chemical Company.

In the early 1940s, that company employed a Polish chemist and salesman who sold cyanide gas, Zyklon B and Malathion to the Nazis for extermination of groups of people in Auschwitz.

After the war the salesman joined the Catholic church and was ordained a priest.

In 1958 he became Poland's youngest bishop and after Pope John Paul I's mysterious death [... After a 30-day reign his predecessor was assassinated and ... -William Cooper, BEHOLD A PALE HORSE, (Light Technology Publishing, 1991), pp.89-90. ... ], the ex-cyanide gas salesman Karol Wojtyla was elected to the papacy as Pope John Paul II in October 1978.

In March 2000, he publicly apologized not for his war effort, but for the wickedness of the Christian religion. The plea for forgiveness also sought to pardon the use of 'violence in the service of truth' an often used fragile and treoubling referenece to the Inquisition.

The apology read by the Pope was the result of four years of work by a panel of 28 theologians and scholars and was by far the most sweeping act by a leader of a major religion.

On few occasions have ecclesiastical authorities ever acknowlegdegd the faults or abuses of which they themselves were guilty. There was concern that the apology was a major theological miscalculation that could undermine the Pope's weakening authority and the unanswered question posed by the international media was --
'In whose name was the Pope asking for forgiveness?' (Excerpted from 'The Crucifixion of Truth' by Tony Bushby)

Saje v reviji Jana (26.10.2004) pojasnjeval to tematiko.

Tallaght - South City Business Park (MAK Fastener Specialists)
doing business as
Today I paid a visit to Tallaght but as the rain became very heavy I had to give up taking photographs however I do plan to visit again in the very near future. Because of the rain I decided to have lunch at captain America's … the staff had the following legend on their t-shirts "Born To Serve", I really do hope that it was the Captain rather than the staff who was born to serve.

Sometime before his death in 792AD, St Mael Ruain founded a monastery that was to become famous for a number of reasons. The Stowe Missal was written in this monastery about 800AD and numerous religious scholars travelled great distances to the area to study. In fact, both Tallaght and Finglas were revered as centres of learning at the time and were referred to as the 'Eyes of Ireland'.

Unfortunately the monastery was destroyed by the Vikings in 811AD. The Church of Ireland parish of St Mael Ruain is built on the site of Mael Ruain's monastery. Commenced in 1829, it was designed by the City Architect, John Semple (1829-42) and the old church still remains with its high rectangular tower.

Today, Tallaght is the capital of the new administrative county of South Dublin. The River Poddle meanders through Tymon Park, which, with some fine water features provides cosy residence for large colonies of wildfowl. Extensive new woodland planting has enhanced a lot of fine walks in the park too. The Sean Walsh Memorial Park is another fine landscaped area.

A multi-level shopping complex - The Square in Tallaght was a welcome addition to the local community. Located about forty-five minutes southwest of Dublin city center, it is linked to Dublin by several high frequency bus routes and the excellent Luas tram service.

While no plan was formally adopted, Tallaght was laid out as a new town, as set out in the 1967 Myles Wright masterplan for Greater Dublin (this proposed four self-contained "new towns" - at Tallaght, Clondalkin, Lucan and Blanchardstown - all of which were at that time villages surrounded by extensive open lands, with some small settlements). Many of the social and cultural proposals in this plan were ignored by the Dublin local authorities, and contrary to planners' suggestions, Tallaght and the other "new towns" were not provided with adequate facilities. Characterised by the same problems associated with poorly planned fringe areas of many European cities, during the 1970s and 1980s Tallaght became synonymous with suburban mismanagement.

While it was absorbed into the larger suburban area of Dublin (including becoming the postal district Dublin 24 in the late 1980s), Tallaght has developed a distinctive identity, arising largely from its rapid growth during recent decades, and now has a thriving local arts, cultural, sports, and economic outlook.

Tallaght's Civic Square contains the seat of the local authority, County Hall, a newly renovated and well-equipped library facility, a theatre building and a "cutting edge" 4-storey arts centre named RUA RED (which opened on 5 February 2009). Along with other local libraries and arts groups, it also has another theatre building, and a homegrown youth theatre company. It is also the home to the Tallaght Swim Team, Tallaght Rugby Club , the National Basketball Arena, Shamrock Rovers F.C., and several notable martial arts schools and

The Rio de Janeiro Metro (Metrô Rio) is a mass-transit underground railway network that serves the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Founded in 1979 with five stations operating on one line, it now includes 32 stations and two separate lines and serves on average nearly half a million passengers per day.

The system currently consists of two lines:

Line 1 (orange line), which serves the city's downtown business center, tourist areas in the city's South Zone, and several neighborhoods in the North Zone. It is a semi-circular line, and is fully underground. It runs from Saens Peña to Cantagalo.
Line 1 A (orange line), is the expansion between stations São Cristóvão and Central, leading to an line to Botafogo. In its traject, the Cidade Nova estation is placed in front of the City Hall.
Line 2 (green line), which serves working-class residential neighborhoods extending toward the north. It is a diagonal line, and almost completely over ground (mostly at graded and partly elevated). This line started as a light rail, but for increasing commuters, it gradually changed to metro. For its origin as light rail, it is fully over ground except Estácio station, although Cidade Nova station will be lifted.
