Saw this little fella on a skating-rink the weekend before last, and what I really liked about him — was how serious and self-confident he was. He wasn't whining and looking for mummy (what many kids tend to do) — he was occupied with a business of his own and seemed to be completely satisfied with being left alone. Yet, he was fun to watch.

A most energy efficient residence and acreage in the 50s with an orchard and garden spot. Nearby pond supplied bass for nutrition. Well water and outdoor cellar for canned goods, dried fruits, etc. It served as a storm shelter. And it was also the place where we would have gone in case of the atomic bomb attack most everyone assumed would take place sooner or later. Glad it didn't. There was more than a little public anxiety about the threat of a us and ussr showdown in those days.
