Constantine Historic Commercial District, Constantine, Saint Joseph County
register business
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 17, 1985, the Constantine Historic Commercial District comprises five acres in the original, two-block core of the Village of Constantine's historic and contemporary central business district. The district contains thirty-four commercial and residential structures, the majority of which represent nicely preserved examples of mid-nineteenth to early twentieth century Greek Revival and Italianate styles. The commercial buildings are between one and three stories in height. The Greek revival structures are covered in asphalt shingle, aluminum siding, and painted clapboard with rectangular facade openings, gable ends with returns, and simple classical lines. The dominant Italianate brick blocks display elaborate bracketed cornices, round or segmental-arched windows with hoodmolds or other decorative accents, central roofline pediments, pilastered entry bays, transoms or fanlights, and large display windows.

The Constantine Historic Commercial District derives its significance from both historic and architectural features. Founded in 1828, the Village of Constantine soon became a major regional port for shipping agricultural products east and receiving return shipments for local merchants. Among the important persons associated with Constantine's economic development was former Michigan governor and state senator John S. Barry (1842-1846, 1850-1851), whose river trade and mercantile interests centered in the village. Several Greek Revival structures remain from the period, among them Barry's original warehouse. The prosperity established during Constantine's river trade era carried over into the 1870s when local residents financed a number of handsomely detailed Italianate commercial blocks. Despite alterations to street level facades, Constantine's commercial center remains remarkable for the elegance and historic character of its nineteenth and early twentieth century downtown structures.

register business
This is replica of an original business card of Reverend A.D. Williams, Dr. Marin Luther King's maternal grandfather and pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, dating to around 1908.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Birth Home, located at 501 Auburn Avenue, is the house where Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 and lived in until he was 12.

The two-story Queen Anne-style home was built in 1895. King’s maternal grandparents, Reverend Adam Daniel (A.D.) Williams and Jennie Williams, bought the house for ,500 in 1909. Reverend Williams was the pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church, a charter member of Atlanta’s NAACP, and an early civil rights activist, leading voter registration drives as far back as 1917. In 1926, Martin’s parents, Michael King, Sr. and Alberta Christine Williams King married and moved into the house. In 1927, they their first child, Willie Christine King and two years later, their first son, Michael King, Jr., who would later be renamed after the German reformer Martin Luther in 1934. When Reverend Williams died in 1931, King became head of the household and took over Williams's pulpit at Ebenezer Church. The King family lived in the house until 1941 when they moved a few blocks away. They retained ownership of the house, though, and Martin’s younger brother, Reverend Alfred Daniel (A.D.) Williams King, lived here from 1954 to 1963. In 1971, Alberta Christine Williams King deeded the home to the King Center, and it has since been restored to its appearance during the years of King’s boyhood.

he Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site National Park Service Visitor Center, located at 450 Auburn Avenue, was built in 1996. The center features interactive exhibits and memorabilia tracing Dr. King's life and his role in the Civil Rights movement.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Historic District, an area bound roughly by Irwin, Randolph, Edgewood, and Auburn Avenues, was established in 1974 and later, in 1977 designated a national historic landmark, and expanded in 2001. The district encompasses the environs in which Martin Luther King, Jr., grew up from his birth in 1929 until he left Atlanta.

Colorado - Idaho Springs: Normandeau/Rohner Building

The Normandeau/Rohner Building, at 1617 Miner Street, was built in 1881 and opened by William and Edward Normandeau. The first business in the building was a dry-goods store, which also sold boots and shoes. Within a decade, it became the "Golden Rule Store." At the turn of the century, John Rohner, a bartender next door at Worth's saloon, opened up a competing saloon here. It was Rohner who added the elaborate front for his "high class" saloon/billiard parlor. Rohner was also a well-known boxer who fought for the heavyweight championship of the world in 1900.

The building is a one and one-half story rectangular brick structure built in the commercial vernacular style. It contains some of the most exquisite architectural details of the Victorian era. There is a small, round, arched window with brick arch, radiating voussoirs with keystone in the upper façade, bracketed cornice and paneled frieze decorated with swags.

The Idaho Springs Downtown Commercial District, roughly bound by Center Alley, 14th Avenue, Riverside Drive, and Idaho Street, has been the commercial center of the community since its development in the late 19th century. The Idaho Springs downtown area, with its collection of Late Victorian-Era structures, formed the core of a city where prospector George A. Jackson made the first placer gold discovery in Colorado. It went on to serve as an important milling and supply center for the mining region which accelerated the settlement of Colorado.

Historic Structure in Coalton, Ohio

On the National Register of Historic Places and once the Miners' Supply store that also carried groceries, the structure is along OH93 in Coalton, Ohio.
The now-vcacant structure is historic because it was the first business to use a cash register.

"The National Cash Register Company was founded by John H. Patterson in Dayton, Ohio. Patterson (1844-1922), hoping the machines could save him money by reducing accounting errors in his supply business, purchased the patent rights to the cash register from James Ritty in 1884. Within six months, he reduced his debt and showed a profit. Patterson built the first National Cash Register factory on his family's farm in Dayton in 1888. By the turn of the century, the company had become one of the largest employers in Dayton. Known for his strict training program for salespeople and health and education programs for employees, Patterson was closely involved in the daily lives of many of his workers."

Theodore Eisen

This manor house in it's pastoral setting is a sedate Shingle Style. Built in 1900 by Theodore Eisen, it s perfectly balanced, and demonstrates Eisen's versatility. Although Chester Place, now home to Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles, is not officially a National Register Historic District, it has been approved. The home is now used as administrative offices for the college.
__________

BAYLY, WILLIAM, Mining, Los Angeles, California, is a native of Missouri, having been born at Lexington, that State, in the year 1856. He is the son of Charles B. Bayly and Matilda (Russell) Bayly. He married Eva Houghton at Del Norte, Colorado, in the year 1876, and to them there have been born two children—William Bayly, Jr., and Charles H. Bayly.

Mr. Bayly is one of those successful American business men who did not have opportunity or time to devote to his education before going out into the world to start his life career. His family having moved from Lexington to St. Louis, Missouri, when he was a child, he attended the public schools of the latter city in the Civil War period. At the age of 16 years he gave up his studies and decided to seek his fortune in the West. He went to Colorado and engaged in the hardware business with Alva Adams, a pioneer of Colorado, who afterwards become Governor and is today one of the richest men in the Silver State and one of those who have done much to develop that commonwealth. Between them the two young merchants built up a thriving business.

Mr. Bayly remained in this business for twenty years, during which time he made a considerable fortune. After two decades in the one line, he engaged in the mining business and has been in it ever since. He has mined on an extensive scale in Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California, and today is one of the conspicuous men in the business.

He left Denver in 1895 and went to Los Angeles to establish his home. Since becoming a citizen of the Southern California metropolis he has aided in every movement for the development of the city and Southern California.

He is a member of the California Club of Los Angeles.
