InterContinental History and more......

The InterContinental brand began in 1946 as part of Pan American Airways under Juan Trippe, when the first hotel opened in Belem, Brazil. In 1981, holding company InterContinental Hotels Corporation was sold to UK-based company Grand Metropolitan. As GrandMet focused it core business and expanded into fast food through the purchase of Burger King, ICH was sold to fund the restructure in 1988 to Japanese based Saison Group.[5]
[edit] ICH merger formation

In March 1998, Saison Group sold IHC to Bass.[4]

In 2000, the company sold its brewing assets (and the rights to the Bass name) to the major Belgian brewer Interbrew for £2.3 billion and changed its name to Six Continents PLC.[4] IHG was created in 2003 after Six Continents PLC split into two daughter companies: Mitchells and Butlers PLC, to handle restaurant assets[6] and IHG to focus on hotels and soft drinks.[4] Britvic, the company's soft drinks division, was retained by IHG until December 2005, when IHG sold its interest in the company by an initial public offering.

The line at Georgetown Cupcake
on line business
The anticipation builds as we wait and wait (for about 30 minutes) to buy our cupcakes.

It was totally worth the wait. I am skeptical about this cupcake craze. Scratch that, I was skeptical.

A store employee walked while we waited, giving us all updates on the status of cupcakes remaining. There was a bit of a murmur among the crowd when we learned only a few Red Velvets remained. I was a staunch supporter of the Key Lime cupcake. Kristen poo-pooed the flavor. I insisted it had to be popular. During one of these cupcake updates the employee said something like this:
Empoyee: There are only a few Red Velvets remaining. But if you want Key Lime we have plenty remaining.
Me: Yes!
Her: Oh, I'm glad you're excited, because there are a lot left!
Me: [internally] WHATEVER!

While in the line, we heard of a new business venture that will be started by the woman behind us. She didn't have a name for her new cupcake store, but let me just say this: Tuna Cupcakes. Mmm! On the plus side, the lines will be significantly shorter.

Kalamazoo Passengers Aboard Amtrak Train on Bluewater Line from Port Huron to Kalamazoo Photo by Michigan Municipal League May 2013

The Michigan Municipal League believes that developing effective public transit options in Michigan is a necessary tool for attracting and retaining residents, workers, and businesses. Research shows that people across the nation are choosing communities that offer various modes of transportation, easy access to the places they live, work, and play, and allow them to travel without having to rely on a car. In particular, systems like streetcars and light rail have been credited with sparking new commercial and residential development. The Michigan Municipal League travels all over the state and took these photos from a trip across the state via Amtrak's Bluewater line from Port Huron to Kalamazoo. It's a great way to travel and inexpensive too. You can view a review of this train trip by Flint Journal Editor Marjory Raymer: www.mlive.com/news/flint/index.ssf/2013/05/marjory_raymer.... Public transit is one of eight "placemaking" assets the Michigan Municipal League has identified for making vibrant communities. Read more about the transit asset here: www.mml.org/resources/21c3/transit.html; and read about the other assets here: www.mml.org/resources/21c3/about.html. Without them (l to r: iPhone in case (laptop replacement) and power cords compatible with both the iPhone and this BlackBerry Pearl I'm sending this on). It's amazing my backpack weighs less than 20 pounds fully loaded... I come well armed. Fortunately this pouch tucks nicely into my backpack to securely hide my inner geekness.

The Most Common Beginner Mistake on Google+

Day 3 of my Google+ experiment.

I can only imagine that this is the most common mistake people make, because I know I did it and I know that my friends did it too. When you "share" a post or a photo, you can choose which circles you want to share with. You can also choose to share it with the public. If you want only your friends to see it, share it with your friends circle. But if you want anyone to see it and connect with new people, you want to share it with the public. As far as I can tell, there is no difference between sharing it with the public and sharing it with the public and your friends circle. Once you make it public, everyone, including your circles, sees it.

So when you share your images on Google+, simply share with the public and you will be good to go. Then again, if you are describing that painful bunion, maybe you should keep that to your friends circle.

I hope to see even more of you on Google+. Use this weekend as your chance to get started.

I am curious - Yellow
on line business
Yellow lines aplenty in the southwestern part of Hillfield Park Mews. Though not the supposedly "fake" "wobbly" yellow line reported by Stephen Moore in the Muswell Hill Journal. (That has since been overpainted with a "proper" line by Haringey Council''s contractors.)

I was curious about this news story about a parking fine sent to Mr Gilbert Dyet, a local resident. Mr Dyet, a professional driver who ran a successful car hire business, described the line. "It was not the same height and it was very rough and wobbly. There were no signs. He was sure the line had been painted illegally."

So apparently was the Haringey's press office. A 'spokesman for Haringey Council' told the Muswell Hill Journal: : "We are working with Mr Dyet to resolve the situation to see if there are still illegal lines in the area".

The Journal printed the story on 22 November 2007 headlining it - with nice alliteration - "Fines fury over fake yellow line". There was no correction by Haringey Council.

Which was odd; because I was later told by Haringey Staff that both Mr Dyet and Mr Moore were given inaccurate information. That the wobbly yellow line was indeed legal.

►Update 17 April 2009

I was asked about the eventual outcome of this mini-investigation. My apologies for the very long delay in adding a follow-up. After this posting I was very confused to get two further versions of the "facts" from Haringey and was awaiting some clarity. Looking back over the emails, I realise that it never came.

If anyone would like copies of the emails, please contact me at: alan.stanton[at]virgin.net

Elevated rail lines on Wabash Ave.

Realizing that I have several friends who have never been in Chicago, this is one of its trademarks, elevated rail lines, some of which forms a "loop" in the business part of the downtown. This is from Wabash Avenue. To see the loop, search "Chicago Transit Authority" and go to downtown maps.

Leaving Toronto
on line business
I am on a business trip to St. Vincent. To get their I flied from Ottawa to Toronto to Barbados and then my last hop was supposed to be right to St. Vincent.

After landing late in Toronto because we had to circle quite a bit our plane was late boarding and then we sat on the tarmack for about an hour before going to line up for de-icing.

When we got to Barbados we were supposed to have 3 hours to grab our bags, check in to our next flight and then wait. We ended up having 40 minutes and missed our next flight. They put us on the next flight to St. Vincent which also stopped in Granada (which is out of the way). So we ended up getting in 3 hours late.

I have a few other shots from the Toronto Airport that I might share later.
