District hosts open house for small businesses

LOS ANGELES -- More than 100 small-business owners attended a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District open house to meet division chiefs and project managers Nov. 9.

The public and members of the Los Angeles County Post of the Society of American Military Engineers were invited to the open house during a small business forum and monthly meeting held the day prior.

"The open house was a very successful venture for both the Corps and outside contractors who were inquisitive to Corps working structure and functionality with the local communities and sponsors (City, County and State agencies)," said Ed Louie, project manager, Civil Works Branch.

The open house took place in the District's primary conference room and adjoining Emergency Operations Center. Project managers and division chiefs had various project and program displays and were available for face-to-face discussions.

"Many of the contractors were provided with brochures of the various interdisciplinary branches of the Corps," added Louie. "All were very appreciative of Col. Toy's (District Commander Col. Mark Toy) invitation to the open house and for the Corps representatives time to assist with answering many of the contractor's questions. This is indicative with our motto: 'Building Strong and Taking Care of People.'"

Or are you simply another photographer?

There is an Antiques Store up in Waimea I’ve driven by often, and only recently stopped in to take a look within, though it seems to have been there for as long as I can remember. It is one of those re-purposed kind of places, once someone’s home, and newly celebrated in another way by a group of four friends who are themselves collectors more than successful sellers; it’s one of those places you suspect is more public storage than retail enterprise. From the street it looks very small, and it was, originally; it’s rooms can be accurately described as tiny, and you surmise the house was likely built by someone very short of resources who only included what was felt to be most necessary. But then you get to the back door of the kitchen, and find it opens up into a back porch where additional rooms were added in another L-shape of communal living opened to a sideyard. And now, as an antiques store, what these rooms contain is of an amazing abundance of old things.

I was very short of time the morning I stopped in, and raced through it vowing to return: these photos are from that first visit. When I did return however, it instantly became one of those experiences which simply could not rival my first-time impressions, and I did not snap a single shot, preferring to look back on these, and remember.

Open house for business opportunities

LOS ANGELES -- During an open house July 25, more than 200 business owners met division chiefs and project managers from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District to learn about contract opportunities and, in some cases, simply to learn, how to get started in doing business with the Corps.

Based on the sheer size of the District’s area of responsibility, 226,000 square miles across Southern California, southern Nevada, a slice of Utah and all of Arizona, leadership feels it would be cost prohibitive to get everyone involved in the project process out to job sites to meet the contract partners.

“You really have to develop those relationships with the companies that do the work for us,” said Col. Mark Toy, District commander. “It’s (open house) a very efficient way for our contractors to meet everybody.”

Major District projects are diverse; as construction of the border fence for Department of Homeland Security, rehabilitation of Veterans Affairs facilities, the California High-Speed Rail and the world’s largest groundwater recharge system in Orange County, Calif.

“Hopefully we’re seeing a lot of partnering and mentoring going on between larger and smaller companies,” added Toy. “Not only are we increasing the opportunities, for these companies to work with the Corps, we’re also creating a platform for them to do this partnering amongst themselves. And that’s a good thing, too.”

The open house was held in two sessions, morning and afternoon, in the District's Emergency Operations Center and adjoining conference room with project and program displays and brochures listing various interdisciplinary branches of the Corps.
